The roosting hens are carved from one piece of
Alder wood and were inspired by our Rhode Island Red chickens
putting themselves to bed for the night. About
9in diameter by 6in high and finished with wax polish. The wood was
bright orange when freshly cut but has faded to a mellow
brown.
The gaps between the posts and rails
were cut out with a fine saw.
A small gouge is
used to texture the tail area.
The feathers on the breasts are cut
using a small narrow gouge and a V tool is used for the
long neck feathers.
The tails of the outer hens droop over the perch
and were carved from beneath it.
