Forthcoming Shows and Demonstrations
|
On our show stands we exhibit a full range of carvings,
including large garden sculptures, many of which are for sale, more
details and at the same time there are usually two
woodcarvers demonstrating the craft using hand tools in the
traditional way. We are always pleased to see old friends at the
exhibitions and to catch up on your latest works, and prospective
students will have a chance to meet and talk to Zoe, your tutor, and
see her at work, carving.

What's on the Way?

Additional pictures will be added as Zoe works on
her latest carving. Watch how a log of wood develops into a work of
art. |

|
A log of Cherry about 17in diameter obtained
from near Liskeard, Cornwall. Waste wood around the figures is
removed with large deep gouges and a hand saw. |
|
The gaps between the figures and between the
arms were drilled using a brace and bit and then cleaned up with
gouges. |
|
The shapes of the figures are refined using
smaller flatter gouges, preparing the surfaces for the detailed
carving. |
|
The edge of the skirt is cut and the feet and legs are
carved from beneath. You can see the figures of a hairdresser and
her client emerging. |
|
The back of the client's chair is
carved in relief so that the client now sits in it. The feet of the chair
are relieved from the base which is then smoothed using
a very shallow gouge. |
|

The hairlines of each head are cut and the faces
beneath prepared ready for their facial features. Now their jaw lines and necks
can be established and carved within the necklines of their
clothing.
|
|
 |
|
 |
|
|
|
The hairdresser's face is carved
using small gouges, her hands and arms await final shaping. |
|
Hair rollers are marked out on the client's
head and carved in relief on the prepared surface. Carving her
face is begun, starting with her eye sockets. |
